Working Together for Water: OID Participates in Regional Groundwater Planning Efforts

In our recent newsletter, we highlighted the ongoing efforts to develop a Dry Well Mitigation Plan and a Demand Management Plan (collectively, “Plans”) for inclusion in our Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs). These efforts are part of a broader mandate from the State of California under the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), which requires local Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) to prepare and implement plans to ensure long-term groundwater sustainability.
While the Oakdale Irrigation District is actively engaged in this collaborative, public process, these Plans are being drafted and coordinated by the GSAs for the two subbasins in which OID operates – Eastern San Joaquin Groundwater Subbasin (ESJ) and the Modesto Subbasin. Once completed, the plans will be submitted in the GSPs to the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) for review and approval.
As a reminder, having DWR-approved GSPs is essential for maintaining local control over how groundwater is managed. The GSAs are responsible for ensuring that these Plans comply with SGMA requirements, including strategies to reduce groundwater demand when and where necessary to reach sustainability and to mitigate the impact of dry wells caused by excessive pumping.
OID is one of several local agencies working in partnership with the GSAs to support this important regional planning effort. Community involvement is a vital part of the process, and we encourage all stakeholders to participate. To learn more about these Plans, find details on upcoming public meetings, or provide input directly to the GSA’s, please visit STRGBA.org and ESJgroundwater.org.
Your engagement is essential to ensuring new groundwater management policies reflect the needs of all users and promote long-term sustainability for our region.
