As warmer temperatures arrive, mosquito populations begin to thrive. These insects are more than just a nuisance – they can carry and transmit serious diseases such as West Nile virus, Zika virus, and Dengue fever.

To reduce your risk of mosquito bites and keep your living environment safe, follow these proactive steps:

Eliminate Standing Water

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, and even small amounts can become breeding sites. At least once a week, empty or scrub out water from:

  • Buckets, flowerpots, and saucers
  • Tires, wheelbarrows, and tarps
  • Birdbaths, pet bowls, and animal troughs
  • Clogged gutters and downspouts
  • Check less obvious places too – such as outdoor toys, grill covers, and plant trays.

Use Effective Insect Repellent

When spending time outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, apply EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. Follow product instructions carefully and reapply as needed.

Fortify Your Home Against Mosquitos

  • Inspect and repair all window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
  • Keep doors and windows closed when possible, especially during peak mosquito hours.
  • Use fans in outdoor seating areas; mosquitoes are weak fliers and may be deterred by strong airflow.

Maintain Clean Outdoor Spaces

  • Clean and refresh birdbaths at least once a week.
  • Change pet water dishes daily.
  • Keep yards trimmed and free of debris that can collect water or provide shady mosquito resting spots.
